Solar Cooling
Solar cooling refers to any air cooling system that is run off solar power. This includes cooling through passive solar energy, thermal solar energy conversion or photovoltaic energy conversion (sun to electricity). The solar thermal energy system can be used for both heating water in buildings during the winter as well as solar cooling in buildings during the summer months.
Passive solar cooling works by slowing the rate of heat transfer into a building in the summer and removes unwanted heat from the building. Principles of heat transfer out of the building is considered in the design of the exterior, making this an ideal option for homes an buildings that are in the designed process and have not yet been built.
The U.S. Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 gave funding for a new solar cooling research and development program. This should develop and demonstrate multiple new technology innovations for more energy efficient cooling systems. Solar AC will play an increasingly important role in green building and green design.
