Recycling

Recycling is a process involving processing used materials into new products to: Prevent waste of potentially useful materials. Reduce energy usage, air pollution, and water pollution. And lower the need for conventional waste disposal as well as lower the greenhouse gas emissions.

Recyclable materials include many kinds of glass, paper, metal, plastic, textiles and electronics.  In the recycling process recyclable materials are brought to a collection center or picked up from the curbside, then sorted, cleaned and reprocessed into new materials bound for manufacturing. In 2005, 79 million tons of waste material was diverted away from disposal through recycling and compositing.

Some important steps to recycling: Know what you can and can’t recycle; read up on the recycling rules of your area and make sure you don’t send anything that can’t be processed. Buy recycled; supporting recycling means feeding the loop by not only throwing stuff away in the recycling bin, but also buying the recycled materials available, such as printer paper, or furniture.  Recycle your water, greenery and electronics.
