Solar energy is produced by the light and heat that comes from the sun, which is then harnessed and converted into energy by humans through several different technologies and methods.  The technologies for capturing this energy have been evolving and improving for hundreds of years, but still scientists and engineers have only been able to figure out how to harness miniscule amounts of energy, compared to what the sun has the potential to produce.

Solar energy is the most commonly used natural energy on earth. It is also free, unlimited and most of the other natural energy sources, such as wind power, hydroelectricity and biomass, are secondary sources of solar power. Thus, finding new ways to harvest and use energy form the sun and making use of the ways available now, are vital to improving our environment. Solar panels and other forms of solar electricity are becoming more and more common in buildings, residential areas, and even in homes.

There are two categories that solar energy can be placed in: active solar energy and passive solar energy. The main difference in these two categories is the way the sunlight is captured and used. Active solar energy uses photovoltaic panels and solar thermal collectors to convert sunlight into useful energy sources. An example of passive solar is when a building with materials of thermal mass or light dispersing properties faces the sun, causing the air to circulate naturally.

Aside from researching and using solar energy, there are many other, more simple things that each citizen can do to improve the condition of the environment and reduce the amounts of wasted energy and products. Recycling is one of the more popular and well known ways of doing this that is growing in popularity. Many residential areas now have recycling pick ups or large recycling bins close by. With city and state governments realizing the importance of conserving our resources, the most difficult part of recycling these days is simply understanding what can and can’t be recycled.

In the recycling process recyclable materials are brought to a collection center or picked up from the curbside, then sorted, cleaned and reprocessed into new materials bound for manufacturing. Recyclable materials include many kinds of glass, paper, metal, plastic, textiles and electronics.

Although 79 million tons of waste material was diverted away from disposal in 2005 through recycling, there are many other important actions to effectively practice eco-friendly living.  There are many simple and very important ways in which each person can reduce the amount of energy and resources that are wasted every day. Some simple suggestions: Cut back on using your car. Choose refillable and reusable containers of disposable. Reuse plastic grocery bags or buy reusable shopping bags. Turn off lights when they aren’t being used. Plant a fruit tree.
